How should I prepare for treatment?
Please eat a small meal or snack about an hour before your treatment. Wear or bring loose clothing such as shorts and a tank top. (Acupuncture is performed in a clinical environment and drapes will be provided if necessary).
Please have all paperwork filled out prior to your appointment or arrive early to complete it.
How long will my treatment last?
The initial intake and treatment will take an hour and fifteen minutes. A full medical intake will be performed based on your treatment goals and the information you provided on your intake forms. Following treatments will be an hour long. It is important to be on time for all appointments to ensure the full hour of treatment. If a compressed treatment is needed because of time constraints on your part, treatments can be compressed to forty five minutes.
What are acupuncture needles like?
Acupuncture needles are fine sterile single use needles that come individually packaged. Much care is taken to ensure the sterility of the needles before and during treatment. They are much thinner than any needles used in a doctor’s office and are not much thicker than a human hair.
What does acupuncture feel like?
Acupuncture treatments can elicit many different kinds of feelings. Patients often describe the feeling as heavy, achy, traveling, or a spreading feeling when the needles are being manipulated. When treating painful constricted bands of muscle with trigger points, the patient will feel the muscle jump or twitch. After the trigger point releases, the patient usually feels the muscle loosen and immediately start to relax.
How many treatments will I need?
The benefits of acupuncture are cumulative and often more than one treatment is needed as each treatment chips away at what may be years of disharmony. Each patient’s response is different to treatment and treatment lengths may very. Some patients may have results immediately while others take a little longer. The best results in acute symptoms may be treatment once a week for four to six weeks. Follow up and maintenance appointments may be recommended.
Sessions may also be scheduled for preventative measures and well being.
Can acupuncture be used in conjunction to other healing modalities?
Yes. Acupuncture can be used safely with Western medicine, chiropractic adjustments, massage and other therapeutic methods. It is important to inform me of all medications and other modalities you are using so the most effective treatment plan can be made.
